Sofia Streisand was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and began working in theatre at the age of 14, gaining hands-on experience across nearly every backstage role. Early in her career, she served as Assistant Director to renowned artists including Willy Decker, Phelim McDermott, Martha Domingo, Ivo van Hove, Jonathan Kent, and Graham Vick. Her professional trajectory developed rapidly, and by the age of 24 she had already produced and directed multiple productions in prominent Russian theatres. That same year, she was appointed Head of the Production Department at the Mikhailovsky Opera Theatre, the second-largest opera house in St. Petersburg, where she oversaw major operatic productions.
Streisand soon became recognized as one of the most dynamic and enterprising directors of large-scale festival events and gala concerts in St. Petersburg. In 2014, she directed the Gala Concert celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the State Hermitage Museum, featuring artists such as Anna Netrebko, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Barbara Frittoli. The concert was broadcast internationally on Mezzo Channel. Over the course of her career, she has worked and interned at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Metropolitan Opera (New York), LA Opera, Komische Oper (Germany), and the Mariinsky Theatre.
Drawing on her international experience, Streisand became a pioneer of musical theatre in Russia, a genre still emerging on the Russian stage. She directed The Master and Margarita, based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel, which became one of the most successful original Russian musicals and has played to sold-out audiences for over twelve years across multiple venues. Her other directing credits include Oscar and the Pink Lady, Onegin, and additional original and adapted works.
In 2020–2021, Streisand co-wrote, produced, and directed a large-scale musical adaptation of Alexander Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades. Produced at Broadway scale, the show has sold out an 1,800-seat theatre for five consecutive seasons and earned her national nominations for Best Director and Best Writer, as well as a win for Best Producer. Notably, the production employed more than 80 performers, musicians, and technicians during the global pandemic.
Her musical thriller Bluebeard’s Castle has been performed in six countries (Russia, France, USA, Serbia, Belorussia, Montenegro) and in three different languages. In 2024, Streisand wrote Mistress of the Copper Mountain, another award-winning musical that was produced in both Moscow and St. Petersburg.
In the United States, Streisand expanded her creative work into film and television. She earned two diplomas of excellence in Directing and Producing from UCLA. Her short films The Gift of the Magi and One Twice a Day, both written, produced, and directed by Streisand, received multiple awards and international recognition.
Today, Sofia Streisand continues to work across theatre, opera, musical theatre, film, and television. She is the founder and artistic leader of theatre companies in St. Petersburg, (Russia), Paris (France) and Belgrade (Serbia) and remains committed to bold reinterpretations of classical works and the creation of new, internationally resonant storytelling.
